Marshmallow cold infusion for irritated mucous membranes

Prep5 min
Servings3

A cold infusion of marshmallow root or leaf, traditionally taken for dry, scratchy cough and irritated throat. Six to eight hours in cold water, never boiled.

Ingredients

  • Note: cold infusion. Never prepare with boiling water; the mucilage will be destroyed. Leave one to two hours between this and any oral medication. For children under two years, check with a paediatrician first.
  • 1 to2 tsp chopped dried marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), or alternatively:
  • 2 to3 tsp dried marshmallow leaf
  • 250 mlcold or lukewarm water per cup
  • Optional: 1 tsp honey after straining (no honey for children under 12 months)

Method

01

1. Place the chopped marshmallow root or leaf in a cup or jug.

02

2. Pour cold or lukewarm water over it. Do not warm.

03

3. Let it stand for six to eight hours at room temperature, stirring gently once or twice. The water will turn thick and slightly slippery.

04

4. Strain through a fine sieve into a clean cup. Press the plant material to release the last of the mucilage.

05

5. Drink at room temperature, or warm very gently in a pan to body temperature. Never bring to a boil.

06

6. Traditional use for dry, irritating cough or sore throat: up to three cups across the day, sipped slowly and held briefly in the mouth before swallowing. Acute use is typically a few days to one or two weeks.
