Kneipp water treading

6 minA few mornings a week

A short morning practice in cold water, in the tradition of Sebastian Kneipp. Two minutes of slow stepping in a tub.

Steps

01

Prepare the tub

Fill the bathtub or a deep bucket with cold water from the tap, calf-deep. No ice, no extras. The water sits at tap temperature, which feels distinctly cold but is not painful.

02

Step in slowly

Hold on to the wall or the edge. Step in with one foot, then the other. Lift each foot fully out of the water before setting it down again. Walk slowly in place, the way a stork walks.

03

Stop when the cold gets sharp

Half a minute is plenty at the beginning. Most people work up to two or three minutes after some weeks. Stop earlier if the cold becomes sharp or unpleasant. The point is the practice, not the time.

04

Wipe, do not rub

Step out, wipe the water off with your hands. Do not towel dry. Put on warm wool socks immediately and walk around for a minute until your feet warm up by themselves.

Note

Cold-water practices are not suitable with severe cardiovascular conditions, with diabetic neuropathy or other reduced sensation in the feet, with Raynaud syndrome, or on a urinary tract or kidney infection. Stop and warm up immediately if the cold becomes painful. Hold on to a wall to avoid slipping.
